Editing Rules, Conventions, and Formatting
The number one rule of wiki editing is to be bold. Dive in and make changes. Other people can correct mistakes later, so have confidence, and give it a try! There can be all kinds of editing conventions, rules, and philosophy governing the editing of wiki pages, but the "be bold" rule overrides these!
In general try to write clearly and concisely, and make sure you are always aiming to do something which improves the wiki contents. An edit might be to contribute whole paragraphs or pages full of information, or it could be as simple as fixing a typo/spelling mistakes.
The basic types of formatting - using bold text, italics, or inserting internal or external links, can be done using a selection of buttons provided at the top of the editing box. Simply select the text that you would like to format and then click on the desired formatting option. It's that easy!
However, not all formatting can be done with these short-cuts, and there are some types of formatting that can ensure your content looks as professional as possible. Some of these types of formatting – e.g. inserting new headings of different sizes, or inserting a link with different text than the article title or website address – are done using wiki syntax. Wiki syntax is not difficult to use, and MediaWiki provides a very clear summary of most of the syntax that you as a contributor will need to use in Entrepedia.
If you're still unsure, it is a great idea to practice on your user page (a blank user page is created for you when you register; a link can be found in the top right hand corner of the site for the length of your log-in session). Take a moment to read the MediaWiki guides for formatting and linking, provided in this article. Then, click the "edit" tab on your user page and experiment with creating and formatting a profile for yourself.
You can use the "Show Preview" at the bottom of the edit box to see how your changes look and whether your syntax is working properly. If not, you can simply scroll down the page to the edit box and make the corrections; your changes will not be saved until you click on the "Save Page" button, so you can practice as much as you want without making any permanent changes until you are happy!
By practising on your user page, you will not only become more comfortable with contributing to Entrepedia, you will also have developed a user profile which can help you network with other users (see below for more information).
Linking Pages
One of the key aspects of a wiki is the ability to link between sets of information – this makes finding information that relates to a particular topic easier and faster. When you are adding information to Entrepedia that relates to another page already on the site, it is always a good idea to create an internal link to that page.
It is also important to link to sites outside of the wiki; this is especially important if some of the information you are adding comes from a website, as it shows other users where the information came from, and where they can find out more. For Entrepedia, it can also allow users to see services and ventures that might be interesting or helpful to them. External links are also very easy to use.
If you are not familiar with linking in a wiki, see the MediaWiki page on Links for information.
Edit Summary
Before you save a change, you can enter a short note in the Summary box describing your changes. Don't worry too much about this, or spend too much time thinking about it, but try to give a little description of what you just changed e.g. "fixed typo" or "added more information about viral marketing".
The summary gets stored alongside your edit, and allows people to track changes in the wiki more effectively.
Preview
It's a good idea to use the 'Show preview' button to see what your change will look like, before you save it. This is also related to tracking changes because every time you save, this is displayed to others as a separate change. This isn't something to worry about too much, but it's good to get into the habit of eliminating mistakes in your own work, by using a preview before saving, rather than saving several minor corrections afterwards.
User Pages
The user pages offer you, as a user, the chance to create a profile about yourself, your venture(s), and your experiences. We encourage all users to include at least a brief profile on their user page so that other users can see who is involved with the wiki and where the information they are reading has come from.
The information on your user page is available to anyone browsing Entrepedia, so while it is a wonderful means of networking with other entrepreneurs to share experiences and advice, you should submit any personal or contact detail with caution.
For more information on user pages, see the MediaWiki information on user pages
Talk Pages
There is a talk page connected to every wiki article on Entrepedia; they can be accessed through the 'discussion' tab at the top left-hand corner of the article. Once you have clicked on the 'discussion' tab, select the 'edit' tab as you would if you were editing any article, and add your comments.
The talk pages can be an excellent means of networking with other users on the wiki without submitting your contact details to the public domain, which is not always secure. There are even talk pages connected to each user profile; these can be an excellent means of getting in touch with a user if you are interested in their venture or experiences.
For more information on the talk pages and how to use them to full potential, see the MediaWiki page on talk pages
