Just because you have gone through the the process of raising finance and acquiring any available funding in order to launch your startup doesn't mean that you don't need to focus as much attention on your financial situation. You may require more funding, and even if you don't, understanding your business's finances is crucial; maintaining the appropriate statements and records requires a great deal of effort. You should therefore look into hiring a professional accountant. However, you should still understand the processes and details.


Cash Flow

Cash flow statements are the most important financial statements for start up businesses; as an entrepreneur you should familiarise yourself with the terminology. You will need to know how to calculate, and perhaps more importantly how to manage cash flow.

Funding

Just because you have moved past the startup phase doesn't mean that the funding opportunities that were available to you then won't be available to you now; however you may need to start looking more towards equity investment or loans as there may be fewer awards or grants

Accountancy requires a great deal of work but it is very important: you will need to stay on top of your statements and timeplanning to maintain a crucial balance. As your business grows you may require more experienced accountants, a Director of Finance, or perhaps eventually even an accounting firm.

Financial Reports

Each year your venture will need to compile its financial statements, which will act as a summary of useful information about the financial activities and status of your business. Whether or not you have hired an accountant to undertake this task, you will need to be familiar with the terminology used in the report, because one of the people that it will be most useful for is you.
