If your venture isn't quite large enough to warrant a separate HR department but you do have a small staff team to manage, there are some software solutions available that can help you manage your HR support more quickly and easily.
For example, there are several websites that can offer your venture a unique and private e-mail service, such as 9Cays.com, a service that allows your team to create a group e-mail that will act as a conversation between the people on the e-mail service, and which will then archive that conversation on a separate, easy-to-read website. Or, if you are just looking for a professional e-mail service, you might consider BlueTie.com, a service that provides hosted e-mail and calendaring solutions for small to mid-sized businesses. BlueTie's services include a unique domain name, 10GB of storage per user, spam and virus protection, instant messaging, and mobile support, amongst other features.
If you need to track your employee's time online, services like 1Time's Online Time Tracking website can help you to easily keep track of the real cost of a project for cost analysis on a fixed cost, or for billing after. 1Time will allow you to track your employee's time, keeping an eye on which projects they have been working on, and helping you to calculate their profitability. There's also a free open source solution available in CATS, which will help you hire and manage your employees with such features as their careers website with online applications, e-mail notifications, EEO / EOC data collection and reporting,full-text resume search, automatic resume-to-candidate conversion, job order / position tracking, job application workflow, live reports, and a central dashboard system. On the other hand, Kudos, an employee recognition system, can help you to recognize, reward, and subsequently retain good employees.
There's even a service to help you organise and schedule your employee's vacation and holiday time efficiently and easily, WhosOff, which offers both a free version and a premium retail version of its services. WhosOff will help you track sickness and unpaid leave and easily get control of staff holiday planning; it can also empower staff to make informed holiday requests while allowing you to get details on an individual member of staff's leave for the whole year.
When it comes to organising your payroll, there are, again, a number of different solutions available to you, including PayCycle (a US specific website), and Perquest, both of which will help you quickly build your payroll, and then calculate and distribute your employee's paychecks easily. Both services offer direct printing and direct deposit support, amongst many other features, including automatic withholding of payroll taxes and deductions, or an easy way to include compensation premiums directly in an employee's paycheck.
