A Vision and Mission Statement is essential for undertaking any sort of longer term planning for a business. Because in order to successfully plan how to get there a business needs to state where it wants to go - in other words what its 'ideal future' looks like.
Company Vision
The Company then is this ideal future for the company - it is what the employees will be able to subscribe to and direct their efforts towards. Visions can be idealistic and creative and seek to create a passion for excellent outcomes. In forming a Vision a business can seek answers to questions such as:
- What will the organisation look like in 5 to 10 years time?
- What will be the major products and services?
- What will the shared values of the organisation be?
- What will the culture of the organisation be?
- What will it feel like to be a member?
- Who will be employed?
- What will their key attitudes and behaviours be like?
- What will their qualifications and attainments be?
- What will outside stakeholders say about the company?
- What will the achievements have been?
Once the Vision has been agreed then the business can begin looking at how it is going to achieve this Vision - through developing and succeeding in its Mission.
Defining and implementing a company Mission is an integral part of a company's Planning Strategy.
